Between 22nd and 25th February 1976, the 3rd Congress of the South East Asia and Pacific League Against Rheumatism (SEAPAL) was held in Singapore. This was sponsored by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and the meeting was organised by many of its members who later founded the Singapore Society of Immunology and Rheumatology that same year. The Congress netted over SGD 40,000 and the entire sum was donated to the Academy in 1976.
During the initial years, the presidents and committee members worked tirelessly to increase local interest, education and research in rheumatology and immunology. Many internationally renowned rheumatologists were invited to speak in various continuing medical education (CME) events, several of which were organised together with the Chapter of Physicians, Academy of Medicine (Singapore). The Ministry of Health, Singapore supported these events by sponsoring medical officers and trainees for our various CME activities.
The society’s Annual Scientific Meeting was first organised in September 1987.
This became a tradition for the next decade until 1998 when Dr Chng Hiok Hee (President, Singapore Society of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology) and Dr Kiran Verrapen (President, Malaysian Society of Rheumatology (www.msr.org.my) organised the First Workshops in Rheumatology in Langkawi from 1st -3rd May 1998. This was geared towards 3 groups: primary care physicians, physicians and rheumatologists. Since then this event which is alternately held in Singapore and Malaysia has brought members of both societies closer together through fostering education, training and research
