As the Singapore Society of Rheumatology approaches its 50 th year since its early beginnings in 1976 it is timely to take stock of where we stand now. This new revamped website reflects how our society has progressed since then. The tireless work of all involved, office bearers and members, has led to an over 90-member strong professional body for rheumatology in Singapore.
Over the years we have continued to fulfil our mission of advancing the knowledge and practice of rheumatology in Singapore, through the organization of scientific workshops, symposia and conferences related to rheumatology, the largest being the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR) Congress in Singapore in 1997.
In honour of Professor Feng Pao Hsii, the society inaugurated The Feng Pao Hsii Scholarship fund in 2018 which supports education in rheumatology both in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific; and the annual Feng Pao Hsii Lecture in July 2000. Through these activities we have promoted relationships with and between our members through advancing the field of rheumatology together.
WE are also involved in the rheumatology activities in the region, with the annual Workshops in Rheumatology organised conjointly with the Malaysian Society of Rheumatology since 1998; and our membership of the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR). As we prepare to host the 2024 Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology Congress in Singapore, I hope that our Society will continue to develop and to grow as we build on the relationships and collective efforts we have made.
SSR is not only engaged in the rheumatology community in Singapore, but also in the region as a member national organisation of the Asia Pacific League for Associations for Rheumatology( APLAR) . The FPH-SSR-APLAR Fellowship Grant SSR established by the SSR in 2018 has supported the training of young rheumatologists from the Asia Pacific region, particularly those from developing countries, through providing exposure to the practice of rheumatology in Singapore. Our society intends to increase efforts to further its engagement and profile in the region. The annual Workshops in Rheumatology alternately organised with the Malaysian Society of Rheumatology, interrupted for the first time since its inception, last year in 2020 , will resume as a virtual conference this year, reaffirming our close ties with our Malaysian counterparts.
We now have on our website a dedicated login accessible Members’ section where members can check their subscription status and access recorded continuing medical education (CME) sessions. This year will see the resumption of the case discussions by different Singapore institutions which were put on hold in 2020 by COVID-19, that will now be presented online .
As our society moves along in the changed world wrought by the pandemic, let all members continue to maintain the close ties among us and together build on the foundations laid by our predecessors a vibrant and stimulating organisation.
